About Slateways
Slateways is an individually run craft studio located in the southeast of Ireland which specialises in transforming original pieces of locally sourced antique slate into unique pieces of art. Slateways was established in 2006 by David O'Riordan a highly skilled artisan craftsman. Having spent 28 years as a Master Cutter in the glass industry David takes great joy from working with 'materials of cultural pedigree' and transforming these into works of art. Slateways is the result of David's most recent passion, slate, a material he finds equally challenging and rewarding to work with.
Our Raw Material - 100% Slate
Slateways uses only the highest quality materials to fashion our products. All of the slate used in our pieces is personally sourced and selected within the country, ensuring complete integrity and consistency in the authenticity and quality of our raw materials.
Each type of slate used has a unique story and pedigree in Irish heritage. Our green slate was quarried by the Stewart family of Villierstown c. 1848. The Clashmore Slate we use was quarried c. 1850 and used to roof the houses of local farmers. Our wine coloured slate was introduced to this country from Portland, UK, as far back as 1680. The Blue Bangor slate, quarried in Wales, dates back to the 1890s. You can read more about the history of our antique slates elsewhere on this website.
Our aim is to marry the history and tradition of our past with high levels of craftsmanship, in the creation of objects of beauty which will enhance our lives today.
We guarantee that each piece of slate used is genuine antique, some as old as 200 years. Our testament to the age and authenticity of the slate is included with all our products.
Those who value authenticity will appreciate the integrity of the materials used to make this unique range of products.
Craftsmanship
Uncompromising in his commitment to superb design and product quality David creates each product by hand, giving each piece a distinct personality and charm.
